We are currently seeking a versatile, hands-on Cloud Solutions Architect for our contract supporting the efforts of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to transform their delivery of IT Solutions via the FAA Cloud Services (FCS) program. This position shall be dedicated to assisting the FAA’s Principal Cloud Solutions Architect as required. The ideal candidate is a strong hands-on IT generalist, willing to assume technical leadership as delegated by FAA civil servants, and can thoroughly document 1-3 years of hands-on experience primarily dedicated to providing production-ready IT solutions using services from leading cloud service providers, such as Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure.

Demonstrated experience creating professional-quality automation scripts using a modern scripting language such as Ruby, Python, or PowerShell is required, and experience with modern tools (GIT, Jenkins, Chef, Docker, etc) are a plus.  Operations, Coding Chops, and comfort at a Command Line Interface are a must have.  A strong background in Linux or Windows Server administration is a plus.

The FAA is a complex organization of approximately 50,000 employees with a diverse application portfolio of thousands of applications composed on modern and legacy solution stacks. While assisting the FAA’s Principal Cloud Solutions Architect, you will support the consolidation, modernization, and migration of a large and varied portfolio of IT apps (C#, Java, ColdFusion, PHP, and Ruby accessing Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server backends) to the cloud. You will also assist the FAA’s Principal Cloud Solutions Architect in onboarding new cloud services and supporting the creation of new “born-in-the-cloud’ applications.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Architect highly scalable, available, and elastic solutions that implement industry best practices using cloud services.
    • Create and modify standard cloud reference architectures that apply industry best practices to deploying applications built around the FAA’s existing standard solution stacks.
    • Facilitate and support architectural discussions with internal customers to understand business requirements in order to select and customize cloud reference architectures to guide the development of “born in the cloud” applications.
    • Study the as-is architecture and business requirements of legacy applications in order to assess legacy applications for cloud readiness by examining characteristics, such as loose versus tight coupling, statefulness versus statelessness, dependencies on enterprise service buses or message oriented middleware, hardcoded API calls, licensing, network latency, and processor architecture.
    • Design an intermediate architecture for cloud-suitable legacy applications to allow migration to the cloud prior to extensive modernization efforts.
    • Design and develop professional-quality orchestration scripts and supporting documentation that deploy stacks of resource in an automated repeatable fashion through the use of orchestration engines, such as AWS Cloud Formation or OpenStack Heat, and other automation technologies, such as Chef or Puppet. This includes collaborating in internal and community development teams of Cloud Solutions Architects, Windows Engineers, Linux Engineers, and other Cloud SysOps Administrators via distributed version control systems, such as Git.
    • Administer the FAA’s cloud environments from the command line and the web portal.
    • Design and build virtual networking topologies, including configuring advanced network policies, for complex multi-tiered applications. This includes deploying and configuring infrastructure services, such as Load Balancers as a Service and virtual switches, and programmatic-ally working with APIs exposed by the FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) equipment that provides wide area network connectivity between the FAA Cloud Services domains and the core FAA infrastructure.
    • Deploy virtual machines and “bare metal” non-virtual machines using command line calls and troubleshoot the most common problems with instances. This includes coordinating with Windows, Linux, and middleware engineers when working with clustered environment.
    • Configure alarms, triggers, and scale units to enable automatic horizontal scaling of nodes behind a load balancer or within a cluster
    • Collaborate with subject matter experts in areas such as wide area networks, directory services, etc. to solve integration challenges as required.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or another related degree.
    • A minimum of 8 years of overall IT experience.
    • 1-3 years of hands-on experience primarily dedicated to providing production-ready IT solutions using services from leading cloud service providers, such as Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure.
    • Experience working with AWS Direct Connect and Azure Express Route, designing network architectures to connect the enterprise to the cloud provider
    • Experience with billing and charging back to individual application owners
    • 1-3 years of experience performing the installation, configuration, and administration of Linux or Windows Server systems in a production setting. Use of automated configuration management tools, such as Ansible, Jenkins, Chef, Puppet, or PowerShell DSC is a plus. Experience administering Docker or other container technologies is a plus.
    • 1-3 years of experience creating professional-quality automation scripts using a modern scripting language such as Ruby, Python, or PowerShell
